This Thursday, April 20th, 2017, on an invitation from Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Provost for International Affairs and Director of the Reves Center for International Studies at College of William & Mary, Professor Stephen E. Hanson will give a public lecture at The UWI themed: The Novelty of Putin's Patrimonialism: Analysing Russian Regime Change . The lecture takes place at the University’s Regional Headquarters in Jamaica from 5.30 p.m. (6.30 p.m. Eastern Standard time).

In commemoration of Professor Aggrey Brown, a man known to many as a giant of the regional and international communication industry, the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), at the University of the West Indies, will be hosting its 7th Annual CARIMAC/ Aggrey Brown Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 6PM at the CARIMAC Annex 2. This Lecture is under the theme: What These Eyes Have Seen: Reflections on Key Issues in Journalism and Public Relations. The guest speaker for the evening will be Michael Mike Jarrett who is an Author, Journalist and Public Relations Consultant.

Lecture by Professor Hopeton Dunn on the topic Globalization from Within: Confronting Technopoly, Digital Literacies and our Robotic Futures. April 06, 2017; 6:00 p.m. Jamaica Time (GMT -0500)

The 2017 Annual Distinguished Lecture will be delivered by Professor Hopeton Dunn, Director of the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), and Professor of Communications Policy and Digital Media, UWI. The Lecture will explore the main features of what is now described as the Fourth Industrial Revolution or the Era of Technopoly. It will discuss the leading technology concepts that are re-defining the meaning of work, re-prosing our use of language, transforming the future of entertainment, and forging new cybernetic tools that threaten to dominate human agency. Who will control nano-robots that self-programme, that are embedded in humans and that communicate with each other through advanced artificial intelligence? How will small developing countries such as those in the Caribbean cope with the economic, cultural and digital literacy requirements of these emerging technological purveyors of Globalization from Above? The Lecture offers insights in exploring the new alternative concept of Globalization from Within.

The conference scheduled for two days promises to bring together knowledgeable economists and experienced researchers from all over the world, as well as industry leaders and policy-makers, as they explore the possibilities open to small economies. March 9, 2017; 8:00 a.m. Jamaica Time (GMT -0500)

The keynote speaker for the conference is Arye L. Hillman, Professor of Economics, Bar-llan University, Israel. Presenters from numerous countries, including economists based in the Caribbean, the South Pacific, Africa and North America, will allow for a diversity of perspectives on and approaches to a common set of issues affecting small island developing states and developing countries.
